Inclement Weather & Game Cancellation Policies

As we all know, weather in the beautiful state of New Mexico, particularly during our spring and fall seasons, can be quite unpredictable.  We certainly hope that we will be fortunate enough to have nothing but ideal weather on our game days, but that is of course not guaranteed.

So, if we find ourselves facing inclement weather on a game day, and decide that it is in the best interest of our players' safety and well-being to cancel all games for that day, the cancellation will be posted on our home page at
www.ziasoccer.org and on our Facebook page no later than 7:00 a.m. that morning.  If nothing has been posted, please plan to come to the field and play as planned.

If we start the day with playable weather, which then changes, forcing later games to be postponed or cancelled, the cancellation will be posted online as soon as the decision to cancel has been made.  We will attempt to make this type of cancellation as far in advance of game times as possible, but please understand that advance notice is not always possible due to the suddenly-changing nature of our weather.  If your child is playing his or her game, and we experience a sudden change in weather mid-game, you will be notified of any decision to cancel or postpone by the game's referee (or by the coaches in our youngest division, where we do not utilize a referee).

Zia Youth Soccer League also offers the convenient option of players' families being directly notified of such cancellations through the RainedOut service.  In order to sign up for this service and be contacted directly via text and/or e-mail if any cancellations are made, please click HERE.

All that being said, as with many outdoor sports, soccer games may continue in less-than-ideal weather, as long as it does not pose a risk to the players.  This includes hot or cold temperatures, wind, and even light rain.  However, excessively cold temperatures that are combined with rain may lead to a cancellation or postponement, as will any hail or sleet, wind chills below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, or snow that sticks to the ground or causes a visual barrier for the players.  Any audible thunder or visible lightning will lead to an immediate game postponement or cancellation for everyone's safety (whether to cancel games or to briefly postpone in order to allow the weather to pass will be determined by league administration in accordance with the storm's predicted progress as shown by live satellite images).  Additionally, standing water or soggy field conditions will lead to cancellations in accordance with the field usage policies of the City of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation Department.

Please be aware that make-up games will be scheduled only if two or more game days are cancelled in any given season.
This means that if only a single game day is cancelled during the course of the season, it will not be made up.  However, should second or further cancellations take place, then make-up games will be added to the end of the season accordingly, guaranteeing each team a minimum of seven game days per season.  If make-up games are scheduled, an updated game schedule will be made available online within three days of the cancellation.  Also, if a game is played through halftime, and then cancelled during the second half due to an unexpected change in weather, then it is considered to have been fully played, and is ineligible for a make-up game.

Practice cancellations due to weather will be made at the discretion of the coach, who will notify families accordingly.
