Coach's Code of Conduct

All Zia Youth Soccer League coaches agree to the following Coach's Code of Conduct:

As Head or Assistant Coach, you will serve a very important role in our mission to help children in our community learn to play and love the game of soccer, while developing positive sportsmanship and self-confidence, and of course having lots of fun!  The most important way we can all support this endeavor is to set a good example, and remember that negative behaviors of coaches, parents, fans and others can have a lasting emotional effect on children. Young athletes can become disillusioned in youth sports programs when adults unfairly take the fun out of the game.  Therefore, it is understood that by volunteering as a Head Coach for Zia Youth Soccer League, you agree to abide by the following Coach's Code of Conduct:

I will read, become familiar with, and understand the rules of the game.

I will communicate openly, honestly, and respectfully with parents throughout the season.

I will put the safety of my players first and provide them with a safe and healthy playing environment. I will have a basic First Aid Kit (provided by Zia administration upon request) at every practice and game, and will have warm-up and stretching routines prior to play.

I will ensure all players have the opportunity to play at least half the game, with playing time divided amongst players as equally as possible.

I will treat, and teach the players to treat, other players, coaches, officials and spectators with respect regardless of their race, creed, nationality, religion, color, sex, gender, sexual orientation, or ability.

I will emphasize improved performance, not winning.  I will place the emotional and physical well-being of the athletes ahead of any personal desire I may have for my team to win.

I will do my very best to make the experience fun for everyone.  I will be realistic about my players' physical ability.  I will set realistic team goals and help my players to set realistic goals for themselves.

I will encourage the players to learn and play by the laws of the game and to resolve conflicts without resorting to hostility, violence or other behaviors that could endanger the health or well-being of other players. I will encourage good sportsmanship by demonstrating positive support for all players, coaches, and referees at every game and practice.

I will instruct any of my team's parents to cease disruptive behavior, if it occurs during a game or practice.  I will be familiar with the league's Code of Conduct, which is digitally signed and agreed to by all parents upon registering a child, and I understand that I may refer to and enforce this code in order to curtail any such behavior.

I will refrain from using foul language, alcohol, drugs, nicotine or tobacco products (including all forms of electronic cigarettes and/or vaporizers), or any substance that in any way degrades or damages their condition of performance as an athlete and member of Zia Youth Soccer League at any league activity.

I will communicate with Zia Youth Soccer League Administration for necessary assistance and support in regards to any issues that may arise involving my fellow coaches, league officials, or league policies as needed, and will answer questions posed to me by league administration fully, honestly, and in a timely manner.

I will respect the other coaches and officials and their authority during games and will not question, discuss, or confront officials at the game field.

I will treat my player, his or her teammates, opponents, referees, assistant referees, all coaches, parents of all players, and all league members with dignity, courtesy, respect, and sportsmanship at all times. I will control my emotions at games and practices, and agree to guide my behavior by the common sense principles and ethics which make all of us proud to be associated with Zia Youth Soccer League.

I WILL BE A POSITIVE ROLE MODEL.  I will maintain sideline behavior of the highest standards with no verbal or physical abuse towards anyone at any time. I understand and accept that I am personally responsible for my own actions.

I recognize and understand that violation of this Code of Conduct can and will compromise my good standing with the league, that coaching is a privilege granted to me by Zia Youth Soccer League, and that said privilege can be rescinded at any time, at the will of Zia Youth Soccer League Administration.
